  1. Protective Equipment

    • Using a Sawzall presents a variety of hazards that a properly equipped person  can avoid. Using hearing protection will prevent hearing loss and make work more  comfortable. Both ear plugs and ear muffs provide suitable levels of hearing  protection. In addition to hearing protection, Sawzall users should consider the  level of dust generated by the saw. Respirators are an important part of  personal protection when cutting ceramics or when working in a poorly ventilated  area. Sawzall users also need to wear safety glasses and thick, close fitting  clothing to protect against flying debris.

    Sawzall Safety Practices

    • Sawzall operators should secure loose jewelry and long hair before beginning  work. These items may become caught in moving parts, causing an accident.  Sawzalls should not be used under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.  Cuts should be made using the flat portion of the saw behind the blade as a  guide. This will increase the accuracy of cuts and decrease the chances of  injury from a broken blade. Using the right type of blade for the material being  cut also decreases the likelihood of broken blades and increases their lifespan.  Cuts made with a Sawzall should always be made away from the user to prevent  injury from recoil or other types of accident.

    Maintenance and Condition

    • Proper maintenance is just as important as safety equipment and safe usage.  Before working on the saw or changing a blade, make sure that the saw is  unplugged. Before using a Sawzall, check to see that the electrical cord is not  cut or damaged and ensure that the shoe–the cutting guide–is secure. Always  check the blade before use to ensure that it is secure and in good shape before  cutting. Worn or loose blades may break while in use causing the saw to recoil  dangerously.
