2nd phase exploritory

Lesson plan
Objective: Students will review shop safety and become familiar with processes used in project development to build a step stool/tool holder
Tools needed:
• Surface planer
• Surface sander
• Jointer
• Radial arm saw
• Table saw
• Drill press
• Bench plane
• Router
• Chisel
• Sander
• Screw driver
• Miter saw
• Square
• Drill
• ¼” Plug bit
• ¼” counter sink bit
• Glue
• Bar clamps
• 1-5/8” screws
Day 1:
• Theory: student introduction, shop safety
• Shop introduction; radial arm saw, surface planer, surface sander, jointer, table saw, clamps.
1. Students will layout project using 67” board
2. Students will crosscut one time.
3. Students will then surface plan project to 5/8”.
4. Students will run project pieces through surface sander.
5. Students will rip project in half and joint edges.
6. Students will use three long bar clamps to glue pieces together.
7. Clean up ½ hour every student will be assigned a clean-up duty.
Day 2:
• Theory: Day one reflection- written assignment, working with fractions of an inch, tool safety review.
• Shop:
1. Students will use surface sander to clean off glue and debris. (put clamps away)
2. Students (behind) will practice using chisels for lap joints while project dries.
3. Students will layout bottom notch and taper on side pieces.
4. Students will use the band saw or jig saw to cut v-notch.
5. Students will then use bench plane for taper edge.
6. Students will layout screw locations for pre-drilling.
7. 30 minutes for clean-up all students will have assigned duties.

Day 3:
Theory: Day 2 reflection, Free hand drawing, students will be handed reading assignment for homework “reading comprehension”.
Shop: prepare tray and top using compound miter saw and router.
1. Cut pieces 14-1/4” X3” for sides of tray.
2. Bottom piece measures 14-1/4” long by 7-7/8” wide.
3. Cut center hole in top piece 1-1/2” x 3” using drill and jig saw. (Must be located in the center of top)
4. Locate screw holes on top, bottom and side pieces.
5. Drill holes using counter ¼”sink bit on drill press.
6. Sand project and begin assembly.
Day 4:
Theory: reflection, ladder safety and project assembly.
Shop: Students will screw project together using screw drivers, 1-5/8” drywall screws, and wood glue and ¼” wood plugs.
1. Sand project.
2. Screw shelf bottom into side rails.
3. Glue and screw sides into bottom shelf using pre-drilled holes and put one 6-d nail into top part of side rail.
4. Screw table top into top of side pieces using pre-drilled holes.
5. Router table top edges and handle slot.
6. Sand project and engrave your name on the bottom.
7. Show instructor for grading and completion.
• 30 minutes for clean-up each student will be assigned a clean-up task.
